The multiple player characters that you can acquire throughout your quest, however, don't really have any personality besides the flavour text, battle styles, and short introductory statement. It is enough to hold your interest slightly, though. The story is quite short and while there are a few big moments in the plot, they are few and far between. You definitely want to get some sort of map and/or guide to assist you or you will be stuck in those dungeons for several eternities. This was taken out in this game (for the better I say), and to compensate for this, the developers decided to construct the dungeons into such a way that they're incredibly troublesome and lengthy. In the previous game, dungeons were portrayed in first-person view. Furthermore, enemies can dish out quite a lot of damage at the beginning - when the need to grind is the most highest. The constant need to grind for more experience for levels and more money to get the new, better equipment is tiresome and really starts to wear you down. I wonder why? Phantasy Star 2 can also be quite a difficult game. This, coupled with the opposing dark blue background, makes it incredibly difficult to look at the action, as it started to irritate my eyes and brain. Speaking of the battle screen, the developers really didn't want you seeing it every time your characters get hit by any attack, the screen flashes bright red three times in quick succession like it's just about to start a rave but decides not to. Although there are a few omissions, such as the lack of a proper background on the battle screen, which has been, instead, filled with this blue, three-dimensional grid. The graphics have been slightly improved from the original Phantasy Star, with character portraits and constant enemy animations. At other times, it was a grind-filled, complicated mess. I'm honestly not sure how this game has reviewed so well, it maybe was amazing at its time of release but by today's standards it is archaic and seriously under developed.ħ0% Sega Mega Drive/GenesisPhantasy Star II was a good game at times. Unless you have the utmost patience, magnitudes more than my own or are just truly dedicated to JPRG's. The one thing I can say positively is that the story had some unique twists and turns, it wasn't afraid to go dark when it needed to and some of the biggest aspects of it resonated all the way to the fabulous Phantasy Star 4 Other than that though I can't recommend this. What hurts the most is they stripped out nearly everything that that made Phantasy Star 1 so great, especially those first person dungeons and turned them into the generic nightmares they are now. The lack of information of nearly everything, that characters can be available for your party yet the game never informs you, that various item sets will be suited for one character then under the exact same naming scheme the game denies them using better variants, it's just an endless chain of annoyances and miscommunications. Every time you think you're making some progress the game lurches to a grindingly slow pace through one or many of these factors and it just becomes truly antithetical to the idea of fun. Expansive dungeons, an oppressive encounter rate and a constant pervasive need to subvert players goals with truly annoying design, like hiding secret buildings in towns that can only be reached in certain ways. review- Absolutely hated this game, it's just far too annoying. If you have the patience to endure this game normally all the power to you. By about 1/2 to 3/4 of the way through the game I finally caved and used all these methods in excess just to end of the game and get it over with. I was avoiding using the external emulator features of the Sega Genesis Collection, so no fast forward, rewind or save states. I was mapping areas manually with pen and paper and exploring where I could. I started off attempting to complete this game with as minimal help as possible, so no using external guides, maps etc. 30% PCI am submitting this game as completed without a time simply because I can not give any accurate completion time.
